About Classen Family Dentistry

Keeping your teeth healthy will go along way in reducing other health problems down the road. Visiting a dentist regularly for check ups and cleanings is an important step in caring for your mouth. There are also a few things you should do at home to make sure you maintain good oral health.

Brush, Brush, Brush

I know, we’ve all heard this many times in our life, but it’s true. Brushing your teeth daily (at least twice) helps remove food particles, sugars, acids and other things that lead to decay. Plus, brushing reduces bad breath and the bacteria in your mouth. When brushing, it is a good idea to do so for a minimum of 2 minutes. Use a small amount of toothpaste (make sure you don’t swallow it), and brush the front, top and back of each tooth thoroughly.

Floss Regularly

It seems like brushing should be enough, especially when done regularly, but it’s just not quite sufficient on it’s own. Flossing is important because it clears all of those bad things (bacteria, acid, sugars and more) out of the spaces between your teeth. Brushing gets the exposed and easy to reach surfaces, whereas flossing gets the “hidden” spaces between teeth.

Eat Your Vegetables

Not only vegetables, but fruits as well. A healthy diet will contribute to your oral and overall health. It is important to eat the right carbohydrates, consume minimal sugar, and the right fats. Getting enough protein is important as well. Limiting soda, candy, and other sugary foods is important for your teeth, too.

Avoid Alcohol and Tobacco Products

Both alcohol and tobacco can lead to tooth decay. Avoiding tobacco (whether smoking it, or using a smokeless variety) is a great decision for your overall health. Not only will you prevent staining your teeth, you will reduce the risk of oral cancers, and more. Not only will quitting improve your health, but it will improve the health of your family as well. Limiting or avoiding alcohol will also prevent decay, staining and more.

These are just a few important steps you can take every day to maintain and improve your oral health. Your dentist may have other steps you can take to achieve optimal oral health. Having a tooth problem? Contact us today at Classen Family Dentistry!
